to first start with benghazi. do you see benghazi as being a turning point of sorts in both kpozing the failures of the obama administration and also kpozing the influence or the lack thereof of america globally? >> well it could well be. you look back on turning points at the moment they occur and realize what happened. the administration has not responded to the attacks. he has not brought the people involved in it to justice of any kind. we haven't retaliated. it is over three months when four americans were killed. i think the lack of response, the lack of interest by much of the mainstream media, the lack of debate about it in the presidential campaign certainly indicate an administration that is very comfortable without paying attention to events in the middle east in particular, comfortable with the prospect of american decline, and comfortable underplaying the continuing threat of international terrorism. and i find that very disturbing. heather: disturbing when we take a larger look at the big picture and some of the issues that we addressed when i was introducing you. long

happened in benghazi. why were requests for security turned down in this dangerous situation? but that's not a political conspiracy. that's one of the things that happen in life. >> all right, so what is interesting about this, peter, is that obviously the white house is saying al qaeda is on the run. al qaeda doesn't really sort of exist except in these small pop-up groups. then, so that's kind of the heart of the issue, which is you can't say al qaeda doesn't exist and all of a sudden have an attack by al qaeda. but are you suggesting that the intelligence community did not brief the ambassador deliberately in order to continue working their sources, their intelligence? >> the intelligence community, according to reports of how they brief the intelligence committees about this matter, took out from the unclassified talking points that susan rice used, references to a particular group called ansar al sharia. it's not links to al qaeda, more inspired by al qaeda in libya. they took the talking points out because they didn't want to tip this group off that they were basically looking at

inchbored inch bureau after christmas. >> our ambassador who died in benghazi tragically was communicating with you. he was communicating information to you. it's a great loss that he's not with us. what was he able to tell you? >> he was purchase furnishing us information that he was able to extract from bits and pieces that was scattered all over the offices, and as he gathered this information he would make it a point to get a hold of one of us in the organization of the families that have stuck together, and we would relay that information on. possibly what we were looking for was who else was involved in the downing of pan am 103, was assad, the iranian government? we know that they at one time were very much involved, but to what degree we can't tell you, we don't know and i don't think i want to speculate. jaime: well, stan, the thing is, the lone bomber got a hero's welcome when he returned, and he's now died. do you still believe that there were other people responsible? >> well i think that they provided -- they provided information as if they were to cooperate toward the bombing

.s. consulate in benghazi that killed a u.s.word and three -- u.s. ambassador and three other americans. u.s. ambassador susan rice first attributed it to a spontaneous uprising about an anti-muslim film. that turned out to be false, and now congressional leaders in both parties are demanding answers. and likely the most scandalous incident of the year throwing america's national security into crisis, former cia director david petraeus stepping down over an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. it's later revealed that the top u.s. general in afghanistan, john allen, is under investigation for inappropriate communication with socialite jill kelley. but the intermingling doesn't stop there. the fbi agent who began this entire investigation is himself accused of sending this picture to kelley. he later says it was e-mailed as a joke. yes, 2012 was the year falling for grace for many of these personalities, and in the digital world we all live in, the question for 2013 is not so much what the next scandal will be, but when will it hit and who's in the headlines. in new york, i'm arthel
